SGU is now seeking a senior officer for our vessel Ocean Surveyor. If needed, you may be offered the opportunity to work as a chief mate or, in exceptional cases, as a captain for periods ranging from a few days up to two weeks.
The vessel is operated under SGU's own management and aims to provide Sweden with the best possible conditions for business, infrastructure investments at sea, and sustainable use of marine resources over the long term. Through Ocean Surveyor, SGU investigates the seabed's structure, its environmental chemical load, sediment thickness, and the geological conditions of the sea for animal and plant life. The field season runs from early May to early October.
Job Responsibilities
As a chief mate, you will assist the captain with navigation, line measurements using sonar systems, and sampling. Watchkeeping during operations occurs around the clock, and you will be responsible for the vessel's safety and lifesaving equipment as well as medical care on board. You are also designated as the diving supervisor on board. Additionally, you will assist with geological sampling work.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone who has:
- at least Class III certification
- several years of experience as a senior officer
- ECDIS, Basic safety, AFF, GOC, Medical Care in accordance with STCW Manila
- a valid medical certificate for seafarers
- good ability to express yourself well in both spoken and written Swedish and English
Desirable experiences and qualifications:
- experience working on research vessels
- DP experience
- coastal and archipelago navigation
- hydrographic surveying
To validate your qualifications and experiences, your application must include an extract from the Swedish Transport Agency's register.

Working on board the vessel involves close collaboration in a team that works across different boundaries. Therefore, we are looking for a person who is flexible, unpretentious, and safety-conscious. You are self-driven, have the ability to see the big picture, take responsibility, and are a good problem solver. Furthermore, you are service-oriented and open to others' opinions and experiences, while also willing to share your own. We place great importance on your personal qualities for this position.
About the Employment
Employment type: Temporary employment as needed during the field season from early May to October 2025. Start date immediately or by agreement.

Work location: Uppsala
The position is security classified, and a security clearance including a background check will be conducted on the final candidate. Swedish citizenship and an approved security clearance are required before a hiring decision is made.
